A Zone 3 Prairie Homestead, Done Beautifully.
About Heatherdale Homestead
Hey! We are Joe and Katelyn at (what will be) Heatherdale Homestead.
We are building a 2-acre homestead in Southern Manitoba from the literal ground up! As of spring 2024 there is currently NOTHING on our land but crab grass.
We have 2 acres just outside of Winnipeg Manitoba where we will build a 2-story farmhouse with a wrap-around porch, solar powered greenhouse, food garden, english cottage garden, wood shop, chicken coop, beehive, and pottery studio! Over the next many years…
Here are our conditions:
- USDA Zone: 3b
- Soil: Clay
- Existing Structures: None
- Existing Trees: A few poplars on the NE Corner.
- Enthusiasm: 110%
Follow along on our journey on YouTube as we tackle building our dream home first over the summer of 2024.
Katelyn is taking the Manitoba Master Gardeners program in 2024 and will be the “brains” and the “garden designer”.
Joe is a guy with no off switch who loves digging holes, and the “brawn”, not to mention an obsession with green energy, sustainability and self-sufficiency.
LET’S DO THIS!!
Our Goals
Our goal is to have a productive Zone 3 Canadian Prairie homestead. We purchased 2 acres because this is enough land to feed 2 people. We want to be more self-sufficient as food costs are soaring, and supply chains are vulnerable.
We want to get back to a naturalistic lifestyle where we grow the majority of the food we need.
We plan to have an orchard, raised garden beds, a no till garden area, and rows of fruiting shrubs that span the length of our property lines.
We need our homestead to work for our frigid zone 3 climate.
We are also looking to create something that is visually aesthetic, in addition to productive, with garden beds throughout our property propagated by seed production and plant division to attract pollinators, improve mental health and share our love of gardening with others.
